Foot arthritis can be debilitating, but incorporating stretches and exercises into your daily routine can help alleviate pain and improve mobility. Toe curls are where you scrunch a towel with your toes to strengthen the muscles in your feet and promote flexibility. Ankle circles help maintain joint mobility and reduce stiffness. Calf stretches, such as leaning against a wall with one leg extended behind you, help stretch the muscles and tendons in your lower leg, easing strain on arthritic joints. Toe stretches, gently pulling each toe back for a few seconds, can increase flexibility and reduce discomfort. Finally, seated heel raises, lifting your heels off the ground while seated, strengthen the muscles in your calves and feet, providing support to arthritic joints. If you have arthritis in your feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Grand Blanc Family Footcare. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a term that is commonly used to describe joint pain.  The condition itself can occur to anyone of any age, race, or gender, and there are over 100 types of it.  Nevertheless, arthritis is more commonly found in women compared to men, and it is also more prevalent in those who are overweight. The causes of arthritis vary depending on which type of arthritis you have. Osteoarthritis for example, is often caused by injury, while rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a misdirected immune system.

Symptoms

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased Range of Motion

Arthritic symptoms range in severity, and they may come and go. Some symptoms stay the same for several years but could potentially get worse with time. Severe cases of arthritis can prevent its sufferers from performing daily activities and make walking difficult.

Risk Factors

  • Occupation – Occupations requiring repetitive knee movements have been linked to osteoarthritis
  • Obesity – Excess weight can contribute to osteoarthritis development
  • Infection – Microbial agents can infect the joints and trigger arthritis
  • Joint Injuries – Damage to joints may lead to osteoarthritis
  • Age – Risk increases with age
  • Gender –Most types are more common in women
  • Genetics – Arthritis can be hereditary

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Benefits of Air Casts for a Broken Foot

When facing a foot, ankle, or lower leg injury, patients often choose between a traditional hard cast and a modern air cast boot. An air cast boot, which encases the injured area in an air cushion within a hard plastic shell, offers several notable benefits. Primarily, it provides both stability and mobility. The adjustable air cells within the boot can be tailored for optimal comfort and support, reducing the risk of swelling. The boot's design also allows for limited movement, encouraging gradual weight-bearing and strength recovery. Unlike hard casts, air casts can be removed, which makes activities like showering easier. Additionally, the hard shell provides protection against impact, while the non-skid sole provides safety and stability. Air cast boots are versatile, suitable for minor injuries, and can be used as transitional support after a hard cast is removed. They are lightweight, customizable, and affordable. If you have a broken foot or ankle injury, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to see if an air cast is right for you.

Well-Fitting Shoes

Finding the right shoe size is important for maintaining foot health and overall comfort. Wearing shoes that are too tight or loose can lead to a variety of foot problems, including blisters, calluses, bunions, and even long-term issues like hammertoes and plantar fasciitis. Properly fitting shoes provide the necessary support and cushioning to prevent these conditions and promote healthy foot mechanics. To find the right shoe size, measure your feet at the end of the day when they are at their largest. Ensure there is about a half-inch space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Consider the shoe's width, as shoes that are too narrow or wide can cause discomfort and foot deformities. It is also important to try on both shoes, as feet are rarely identical in size. A podiatrist can provide expert advice on the best shoe type for your foot shape and specific needs, helping you avoid common pitfalls, in addition to finding shoes that offer both comfort and support. It is suggested that you schedule an appointment with this type of medical professional for personalized advice and to address any existing foot issues.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Grand Blanc Family Footcare. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Heel Pain Can Be Treated!

Do you suffer from heel pain when you get up in the morning? If so, you should seek the professional help of your podiatrist and have a proper diagnosis performed. Heel pain can be caused by several different foot-related conditions.

Acquired adult flat feet, also known as progressive collapsing foot deformity, is a condition where the arches of the feet gradually flatten over time. This can lead to pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. The condition is often caused by posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, where the tendon that supports the arch weakens or tears. Other contributing factors include obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and injuries. Symptoms typically start with pain along the inner foot and ankle, followed by visible flattening of the arch and outward rolling of the ankle. If left untreated, the condition can lead to severe deformity and arthritis.  Relief options can include orthotic devices, and in advanced cases, surgery to repair or reconstruct the affected tendons and bones. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Grand Blanc Family Footcare. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
